Microchipping

For any responsible pet owner, a micro-chip is an essential. It allows for an animal to be reunited with its owner as quickly as possible. The micro-chip is a form of identification that no matter the time span an animal has been lost – whether it be a day or a year, the owner will still be traced.

Nicola’s cat Skittles had been missing for 6 weeks and Nicola was overjoyed when she received a call from the Kloof & Highway SPCA advising her that her cat had been brought in by a kind member of the public. She’d given up hope of ever finding her cat again but, thankfully, Skittles was microchipped, and this made it possible for Nicola and Skittles to be reunited.

  • A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades.
  • The procedure is quick and can be performed by a veterinarian during a routine wellness visit. Each chip has a serial number that is detected by using a handheld scanner.
  • When scanned, the chip reveals a serial number. The microchip company is then contacted to access their database so that we, in turn, may be given the owner’s contact information.
  • It is very important that the owner’s contact information and address be kept up to date with the microchip company. There have been many instances where owners have forgotten to update their details and can sometimes lead to a time delay and in some cases an almost impossible task to find the owner.

You can have your pet microchipped at the Kloof & Highway SPCA Clinic at a cost of R275. Contact our team to find out about our mobile clinic operating during lockdown by emailing marketing@kloofspca.co.za.
