A WOW event
Put together a sunny KZN winter’s day, 1 100 generous hearted people, craft brews and great food stalls, music, a supervised kids’ area, and you have the recipe for a fun-filled happening. This was our super-successful annual Ales for Tails fundraising event on the 3rd August. Huge thanks to our sponsors, the crafters, suppliers and our Kloof and Highway community for making this such a special and rewarding day, and for helping us to raise an amazing amount for the animals in our care!

Sarah adds Pedal Power to her passion for animals
Sarah van Heerden is your Kloof and Highway SPCA Operations Manager. As a result, she witnesses animal cruelty first hand, and is passionate about helping the victims. A task which requires dedication as well as money, as Sarah knows well.
It was this combination that inspired Sarah to undertake a fundraising cycle marathon of 1,600Kms which she paid for herself, only using Facebook to ask others to join her by making their individual Back-a-Buddy donations.
The circular route began and ended in Wellington in the Western Cape, covering 24,000 metres of climbing unsupported by other than one cycling companion and a GPX file route on her Garmin.
The ride took 7 days, starting at 4.00am each morning, and sometimes going into the night until 11.00pm. The route covered thirty of South Africa’s spectacular passes including Montagu, Meiringspoort, Swartberg and Baineskloof. But the going was rough, mainly on dirt and gravel back roads and a few jeep tracks.
Each day, the sunrises and sunsets were magnificent, as was the hospitality of people along the way. And the amount of money raised by kind people supporting Sarah’s ride is doing what she loves best – helping animals in distress.
Our thanks go out to Sarah and all who rode with her in spirit and in generosity and for helping us to raise an amazing R131 000.

A surprise for our loyal shoppers
We’re thrilled to launch our ‘Paw Rewards’ loyalty cards to give something back to our loyal supporters.
We know that there’s a choice between many thrift shops. So when you choose to support your SPCA, we truly appreciate that you’re making a life-changing decision for the animals in our care who directly benefit from your purchases.
With your Paw Rewards card, every time you spend more than R100 at certain of our Village Green shops, you’ll get your card punched. Once you’ve earned 10 punches, you’ll receive R100 credit to spend at the shop of your choice.
Your Paw Rewards Loyalty Card is applicable to all our Village Green shops, as well as the Ella Bella shop, but exclude the Tea Garden, Spaza and Nursery.
Please note that the allocation is one punch per day for any amount over R100. Should customers spend two or more amounts of R100 between different shops on the same day, the one punch per day still applies.

To warm your heart – your impact on KwaNyuswa
One of the areas where your support makes a great difference is in our outreach programmes.
The recent outreach in the nearby KwaNyuswa community proved this without any doubt. These results will surely warm your heart knowing how your outreach donations were used.
154 Animals were vaccinated against rabies, reducing the possibility of this deadly disease for both animals and people. 96 Dogs were sterilised as well as 12 cats. Sterilisation means a better quality of life for the animals and the prevention of regular unwanted litters which go on to compound the problems of animal suffering.
We were grateful to be given the use of the local building which we turned into a temporary clinic. This was especially important as we were there not just for a day, but for a full week.
Because people are struggling financially, it doesn’t mean that they don’t care about their animals, so it was heartening to experience the community’s genuine appreciation for improvements to their animals’ health and wellbeing.

The timing of the outreach was chosen to include the school holidays, so that our Inspectors and staff could interact with the children as well as adults to give them guidance on the welfare of their animals.
Thanks to your generosity, as well as that of various sponsors, we were also able to hand out some treats and snacks to the owners and children so that they didn’t go home empty handed. And all the animals treated went home with a bag of food, a blanket and a bowl.
What we did learn from our visit is that the need in Kwanyuswa is great, and a follow up by our Inspectorate team will be needed.
