To warm your heart – your impact on KwaNyuswa

To warm your heart – your impact on KwaNyuswa

To warm your heart – your impact on KwaNyuswa

One of the areas where your support makes a great difference is in our outreach programmes.

The recent outreach in the nearby KwaNyuswa community proved this without any doubt.  These results will surely warm your heart knowing how your outreach donations were used.

154 Animals were vaccinated against rabies, reducing the possibility of this deadly disease for both animals and people.  96 Dogs were sterilised as well as 12 cats.  Sterilisation means a better quality of life for the animals and the prevention of regular unwanted litters which go on to compound the problems of animal suffering.

We were grateful to be given the use of the local building which we turned into a temporary clinic.  This was especially important as we were there not just for a day, but for a full week.

Because people are struggling financially, it doesn’t mean that they don’t care about their animals, so it was heartening to experience the community’s genuine appreciation for improvements to their animals’ health and wellbeing.

The timing of the outreach was chosen to include the school holidays, so that our Inspectors and staff could interact with the children as well as adults to give them guidance on the welfare of their animals.

Thanks to your generosity, as well as that of various sponsors, we were also able to hand out some treats and snacks to the owners and children so that they didn’t go home empty handed.  And all the animals treated went home with a bag of food, a blanket and a bowl.

What we did learn from our visit is that the need in Kwanyuswa is great, and a follow up by our Inspectorate team will be needed.

We asked and you answered – thank you!

We asked and you answered – thank you!

We asked and you answered – thank you!

When we shared with you a wish list from our clinic, it seemed like a big ask – but it was for a big reason.

Our creed is to give any animal that comes into our clinic the very best of care.  But it’s often not understood that veterinary medical equipment is no less expensive than that for humans, and is an ongoing expense for our clinic.

A generous response to the wish list has meant that we’ve been able to buy three sterilisation cradles.  Thank you, so much, for helping us keep down uncontrolled, unwanted animal populations, and the suffering that goes with them.

High on our list of current needs at the clinic is a Hawkmed  infusion pump, which delivers fluids (like pain relievers)  to our ‘patients’ during surgery and other procedures.  But at a cost of R8 122 it’s currently out of reach, unless caring friends like you will reach out with another donation by clicking here.

It’s a joy to know that even in today’s world, wishes can come true.  Thank you for being part of that.

A Hawkmed infusion pump is high up on a clinic ‘wish list’.

Our creed is to give any animal that comes into our clinic the very best of care.  But veterinary medical equipment is no less expensive than that for human treatment and is an ongoing expense for our clinic.  Below is a glimpse of present needs with their prices.  Any help towards these would be greatly appreciated.

  • Three spay cradles at R1345 each
  • Animal Handling Support Systems: Two syringe poles at R3850 each

Rabies Clinic

Rabies Clinic

On Sunday the 2nd October Kloof and Highway SPCA Clinic team hosted a Rabies Clinic.

It was wonderful to see the public coming through with their pets and over the period of 2 hours 290 dogs and cats were vaccinated against rabies.

The staff also took the opportunity to educate pet owners on the importance of vaccinations as well general education on puppy training, diet, and behavioral issues.

The Theme for this year’s World Rabies Day was – Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths. Coming together is key to disease elimination. Rabies exemplifies the interconnection between the health of humans, animals and the environment. Rabies is currently a very serious problem in South Africa, with outbreaks in animals occurring in all nine provinces. High-risk dog rabies cycles are present in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and on the Free state-Limpopo border. Hot spots for KZN Veterinary Services are Durban (180 cases this year so far) and the KZN Coast of rural communities (323 cases with 2 human deaths so far this year).

There has been a drastic increase in the number of positive cases in KwaZulu-Natal and in-between the period of January 2022-August 2022. Our Kloof and Highway SPCA has had 51 Rabies positive cases pf the 180 total cases so far. Hammarsdale is an area where there is an increase in numbers that are expected to grow considerably in the future. We urge all pet owners to ensure that their pets are vaccinated against Rabies, it is a legal requirement to ensure that this is done. There is no cure once the Rabies virus is contracted. Rabies vaccinations need to be done annually to ensure the vaccine remains effective, and thereby not only protects your four-legged companions but also your immediate family and community.

From the Clinic: Bingo

From the Clinic: Bingo

Bingo was surrendered by his owner to the Kloof and Highway SPCA at the beginning of July and quickly stole the hearts of our staff.

Bingo was brought in by his owner because he could no longer take care of him.

He had tried to continue to care for his beloved dog after losing his job but sadly his circumstances had changed and there was no light at the end of the tunnel and he knew what he needed to do was make sure Bingo was taken care of. On admission, Bingo was matted, underweight, and lethargic but still had a wagging tail and a happy face. Our Clinic vet, Dr. Bangay found that he had biliary and would need medical care. Due to his dehydration, he was immediately put on a drip and was given the necessary medication. Bingo spent time in the clinic and soon perked up and was fed Hills Nutrition AD. He was given a trim and a warm bath. He started to feel much better and his big personality started to shine through! He is a happy little dog who loves going for walks and stops to say Hi to everyone.

Once Bingo was better, he was put up for adoption. This sweet-natured little dog needed someone who would understand him and give him the loving care he needed. Caroline Durrett‘s daughter told her mom about Bingo and Caroline, who had lost a beloved Maltese called Buffy some time ago, had not been ready to adopt another dog for some time. Her other little Maltese, Lulu needed company as did Caroline and her family, and when she met Bingo she knew straight away that the time was right to add a new family member

In Caroline‘s words, “Bingo has adopted us as if we always had him. He gets on so well with Lulu, my little Maltese although he still does not like to enter a bathroom. He loves everyone who visits and greets us all with his front paws waving. Bingo and Lulu sleep together on our bed at night and just love each other. Macayla, my granddaughter spends many happy moments with him and my husband has also grown so fond of Bingo who goes straight to him for a cuddle when he returns home every evening. Bingo loves to hare around the garden, chase the ball and any cat that ventures into the garden. I miss my Buffy terribly but when I met Bingo, I knew the time was right to adopt and I am so very happy I waited for our special little Bingo!”

Bingo has found his happy ending with his new owners who love him dearly.

From the Clinic: Misty

From the Clinic: Misty

During the floods our Inspectors went out to assist as much as they could. Many animals were stranded and left helpless.

Our Inspectors brought in two small kittens from a disadvantaged area who would have surely died had they not been rescued.

These two little kittens showed such a fighting spirit and were put in our high care to be monitored and cared for. The one little kitten had a gaping hole in her neck which was clearly a burst abscess. Our Clinic team wanted to save her as she had been through so much to make it to us.

She was treated and thankfully made great progress. Little Misty, as she is now called, was adopted by one of our Inspector’s daughters who noticed her and fell in love with her straight away. Misty went home at the end of May and is thriving with the love of mom Rachel. Rachel brought Misty to visit us and showed us how she is now walking on her little harness. Misty is so loved and her life has gone from fighting for her life to sleeping contentedly on her mom’s chest at night.

There are so many Misty‘s out there that sadly do not get the chance to live a better life. Please remember to support our Outreach Work and our Sterilisation campaigns as most kittens are not as lucky as Misty. Thank You to our Inspectors for finding Misty and to Rachel for choosing to give her the chance at the life she so deserves.

Misty visits our SPCA 3 weeks after her adoption…
