Inspectorate Story: Rescuing Thea with Lee Bryant

“Heros are ordinary people who make themselves EXTRA-ordinary” – Gerard Way

Hero is the word that comes to mind when describing our friend of the animals Warrent Officer Lee Bryant who recently rescued a German Shepherd puppy that was tied to a pole in the hot sun with no food or water.

He brought her straight to our SPCA where she was admitted and cared for. Once she had put on weight from her Hill’s Pet Nutrition diet and lots of treats from Lee, she was sterilised and ready to go home. He named her Thea 💙 and we were so happy to see Thea for a visit yesterday looking healthy, happy and settled with her new family.

Thank YOU Lee for choosing to never turn away from injustice and being a hero to so many daily as well as a hero to Thea!

Boots Loving Life With Her New Family

Boots Loving Life With Her New Family

Cindy and Boots – a love story

From childhood, we all know that ‘once upon a time’ is how every good story begins.  And this story follows through about a small black dog found tied to another dog which had died.

Completely entangled, unable to move, traumatised and scared, she was thankfully rescued and brought in to us.  We’d recently lost a staff member who’d brought sunshine into everyone’s lives, so we passed on her name – Cindy – to this little dog.

Canine Cindy carried on her namesake’s tradition of bringing sunshine into everyone’s lives, steadily creeping into all our hearts.  And eventually, grown in confidence, Cindy was ready for adoption.

Enter the heroes of this story – a caring couple looking to provide a loving home for a dog. As in all rewarding fairy tales, it was love at first sight on both sides.

This could have been ‘the end’, but it wasn’t!

In a second chapter of this story, someone in a shopping centre parking lot heard pitiful crying coming from the boot of a car, and waited for the driver to return.

Once confronted, he handed over the terrified little dog, and again she was brought to us. Boots, as she affectionately became known, grew into a vivacious, cheeky and opinionated character, loved by all.

When Cindy’s owners came back to visit us they decided to adopt Boots.  Boots went home with her new family, where she’s now best friends with Cindy.

All that’s left to say is, ‘they lived happily ever after.’

Kloof and Highway SPCA Hero – Kerri Andrews

Kloof and Highway SPCA Hero – Kerri Andrews

A hero means different things to different people.

The hero chosen this month may seem an unlikely hero,  however, she is the definition of a hero to the many animals that she works with, rescues, saves and treats.

Once you get through all the bravado, the chaos and the messy red hair – Kerri Andrews, Inspector and Clinic Supervisor, has the most enormous heart. Her compassion and empathy when it comes to animals is to be admired.

No matter the situation or the danger it may bring, Kerri will be the first to put her hand up if she knows she could help an animal. The Kloof and Highway SPCA is proud to have Kerri Andrews as a staff member knowing she has the animals needs as a priority. So, if ever you happen to visit our clinic, just look for the loud red head with a heart of gold.

A Vet for all animals and seasons – our Dr Nic!

Dr Nic Bangay joined our clinic team at the beginning of the year.

Prior to this he had his own practice in Amanzimtoti for a number of years, and thereafter spent a few years in practice in New Zealand and the U.K. On returning to South Africa he went into farming in Nottingham Road where he has a number of cattle and sheep.

Dr Nic is dedicated and passionate about animal welfare, and as Principal Vet at our Kloof and Highway SPCA, he ensures all our patients receive the very best veterinary care at all times. SPCA Hero – Siya Ntuli

SPCA Hero – Siya Ntuli

Siya is the epitome of what a person who works in animal welfare should be.

He is a true warrior for the animals and loves them fiercely.

Siya loves a happy ending and is all smiles when an animal can be saved and adopted. He has a quiet demeanor and masks his sadness when he is unable to help an animal he wishes to. Siya works with passion and dedication and goes over and beyond the call of duty.

When he lost his home during the floods, against all odds he made it into work as he was worried about his beloved animals. He has a genuine heart for all animals. He will be there for them when no one else is looking, or sees, or cares – this is what makes him our HERO.

Siya – you are the shining light for those animals you care for and love. Thank YOU for being the best example of what everyone who claims to love animals should be! You never lose sight of WHY and you genuinely notice those others turn away from as they may not cross all the boxes and are another statistic – not to you, to you they ALL matter!

SPCA Hero – Petra Abrams

SPCA Hero – Petra Abrams

Humble, hardworking, kind and compassionate are words that aptly describe Inspector Petra Abrams.

Petra goes the extra mile when it comes to ensuring animal cruelty is dealt with. She educates and assists people wherever possible to ensure animal owners know what is best for their animals.

Petra knows the law as far as animal cruelty is concerned and will attain a warrant wherever she feels necessary if it is going to abate cruelty to an animal. Petra loves doing pre-home checks for prospective adoptees of our animals and is thrilled when she can witness an unwanted or stray animal going to a new home and getting its second chance to be loved as it should be.

Seeing an animal’s life turned around for the better gives her a deep satisfaction. It is not an easy job and she sees a lot of terrible suffering. Inspector Abrams joined our SPCA 9 years ago. We are grateful to Inspector Abrams for her dedication and love of all animals and look forward to having her as a part of our team for many more years to come.
