Justice for abused chickens in Pinetown cruelty case

The Kloof and Highway SPCA has successfully secured a conviction in a deeply distressing animal cruelty case, another important victory in our unwavering fight to protect animals.

On Thursday, 08 February 2024, Kloof and Highway SPCA Inspector Petra Abrams responded to a complaint from a concerned member of the public reporting an overpowering smell of death at a property in Pinetown. Upon arrival, Inspector Abrams was met with a horrific scene.

Inside a garage, dozens of chickens were found in unimaginable conditions! Forced to live amongst decomposing carcasses; bones scattered underfoot, and surviving birds left to starve. With no food, some chickens had resorted to eating the remains of the dead in a desperate attempt to survive. Many were critically ill, unable to move, and suffering immensely.

The owner admitted that the chickens had been sick for some time and made the deliberate decision to stop feeding them altogether.

Due to the extent of suffering, SPCA Inspectors humanely euthanised 52 chickens to end their pain.

⚖️ The court has now ruled as follows:
•   The accused received a 12 month prison sentence, wholly suspended for 5 years, on condition of no further offences.
•   He has been declared unfit to own or care for animals for 10 years.
•   He has been ordered to pay R10,000 to the Kloof and Highway SPCA as compensation.

This case highlights the devastating reality of neglect, but also the power of action, accountability, and justice.

This is a victory for every voiceless animal who suffers in silence.
