The joy of adoptions:
We’ve no doubt that you share our joy when any animal in our kennels is adopted and goes home to a loving family.
Recently, we’ve had three reasons to be joyful and grateful:
Ada:Â Last November, a Kloof Neighbourhood Watch member, Tom, contacted us about a mother dog and her puppies heartlessly dumped on the side of the road.
Field Officer, Philani Nzama went to the rescue whilst Tom stayed with the little family. Terrified, and fiercely protecting her puppies, the mother dog bit Philani in fear. Â But Philani has a special touch, and mother and pups were soon safe with us, snuggled into a warm bed with blankets, food and water within reach.
We called her Ada, and she was a perfect mother, nursing and caring for her litter until they were old enough to leave her. One by one the adorable puppies were adopted, leaving mum behind.
Not one to attract attention to herself, Ada was often overlooked for adoption. She didn’t wag her tail non-stop or hang out her tongue to alert passers-by to her presence. She would quietly walk up to the fence with a hopeful heart or a scratch or a soft hello.  Ada just waited patiently. And after eight months, her patience was rewarded. Someone saw her for what she was, and fell in love with her.
It was hard to say goodbye when Ada went to her new home. But it really proved that ‘good things come to those who wait’. Ada waited, and waited, and waited as we watched, and we’re sure that you share with us the joy of knowing that Ada is now enjoying the ‘good things’ of life, as she deserves to do.
Alfie: A forlorn little pup when he was picked up as a stray by one of our Inspectors.
His condition was shocking. His little body was thin and dehydrated. His jagged cut ears were still bleeding and infected. His tail had been broken, so what should have been a wagging tail going back and forth, was crooked and bent between his legs.
In spite of the cruelty inflicted on him, Alfie’s spirit was intact and we nursed him back to a playful, energetic ‘survivor’ with a zest for life, without a hint of bitterness or anger. It was these very characteristics that spoke to Arthur and Theresa who chose Alfie to add to their existing family.
Now Alfie has a life of bedtime cuddles, walks in a forest and visits to a farm. Alfie may have his outside imperfections, but inside he’s beautiful and deserving of the loving home that’s been given to him by Arthur and Theresa.
To all those who adopt an animal from the SPCA, ‘Thank You’. And to all those who help us keep animals until they can be adopted, an equal ‘Thank You’.
Thank you for your caring, your love, and your contribution to the eventual joy of adoption.
Assagay with his new best friend, Donnee.
Donnee, a concerned animal lover, brought Assagay to us as a stray, regularly keeping in touch and sharing Assagay’s plea for a family of his own.
Donnee was aware, as we were, that a dog like Assagay was unlikely to be a first choice for adoption. Compared with others, Assagay is an old dog that nobody wants, not handsome, not playful, a cross breed rather than a pure breed – but inside and unseen he has the purest heart.
We were all starting to lose hope. But unknown to us the magic that happens between animals and humans was growing into an unbreakable bond between Assagay and one of our volunteer dog walkers who has adopted him.
Assagay now has a home of his own; he’s loved and cared for; and his senior years will be filled with the slow Sunday walks that he so enjoys. And we’ve no doubt that he’s giving back a hundredfold in return, with all the loyalty and affection that a dog can give to his family.

Assagay with his new best friend, Donnee and on the right is Alfie.

Cindy and Boots – a love story
From childhood, we all know that ‘once upon a time’ is how every good story begins. And this story follows through about a small black dog found tied to another dog which had died.
Completely entangled, unable to move, traumatised and scared, she was thankfully rescued and brought in to us. We’d recently lost a staff member who’d brought sunshine into everyone’s lives, so we passed on her name – Cindy – to this little dog.
Canine Cindy carried on her namesake’s tradition of bringing sunshine into everyone’s lives, steadily creeping into all our hearts. And eventually, grown in confidence, Cindy was ready for adoption.
Enter the heroes of this story – a caring couple looking to provide a loving home for a dog. As in all rewarding fairy tales, it was love at first sight on both sides.
This could have been ‘the end’, but it wasn’t!
In a second chapter of this story, someone in a shopping centre parking lot heard pitiful crying coming from the boot of a car, and waited for the driver to return.
Once confronted, he handed over the terrified little dog, and again she was brought to us. Boots, as she affectionately became known, grew into a vivacious, cheeky and opinionated character, loved by all.
When Cindy’s owners came back to visit us they decided to adopt Boots. Boots went home with her new family, where she’s now best friends with Cindy.
All that’s left to say is, ‘they lived happily ever after.’

Drew and Nancy were surrendered to our Kloof and Highway SPCA, with their two puppies.
These beautiful, friendly dogs spent time in our kennels, were walked by our dog walkers and went up for adoption.
Their puppies were cared for in our puppy unit and went up for adoption. All four family members were adopted – although separately to four new homes, it was a joyful day when Drew and Nancy were collected by their new owners at exactly the same time. The puppies went home a bit earlier. Bernha and Tys took Drew home and absolutely fell in love with this gorgeous boy. The Gouws adopted Nancy who had a new sister waiting to meet her (Maia).
Bernha and Tys realised that Drew was a little lonely after two weeks at home and decided to give another homeless animal a second chance at a loving home. Together with Drew, they arrived at the kennels and in a heartbeat little Jazzy‘s face looking up and out melted their hearts. After some meet and greet time in the social area under the guidance of Lara our Kennel supervisor, the decision was made to offer Jazzy a forever home with Drew. Jazzy had come in with her little puppy Schruffalo who was adopted and Jazzy was left on her own, so we are very grateful that she found love in the home of Bernha, Tys and Drew.Â
One of the pups, little Ollie (Rocket) was adopted by Jaryd who has commented – “This little ball of fluff is the perfect addition to our family. He loves playing with Zack, our sausage dog and is obsessed with leaves and the grass. What a blessing this dog is and we love him endlessly!”

Nov 1, 2022 | Adoptions, Cats
The adoption of cats is sadly an area where there are far far too few adoptions, so when someone adopts two kittens or cats together, it really does bring such hope.
Our Kloof and Highway SPCA are always needing more adoptions, however in the past six weeks we have been blessed to have people choose to adopt in pairs. Malibu and Hershey, Ed and Ebony, Grace and Vera, The Cat and Pekin, Tony and Zion, Lizzy and Lenni and Gus and Mac.Â
Thank you to everyone who chose to adopt two kittens or cats, it really is so beneficial for them to be adopted in pairs!
Pathways Special Needs School contacted us to please come and collect two tiny kittens as they were afraid something would happen to them living on the streets as strays. These gorgeous little kittens were so bonded and it was hoped that there was a chance they could be adopted together. Not only did they get adopted together, but they were chosen by twin girls which made this adoption doubly special! Lizzy (now Butternut) and Lenni (now Coco). Pictures above.
“Thank you for giving our Twins, Olivia and Georgina, the opportunity to adopt kittens. They have waited for about 2 years to be allowed kittens. When they turned 6 years, they could go to SPCA to choose a kitten.
When we arrived, these two kittens were sleeping next to each other. The girls hardly looked further as they were captured by these sweet gentle cats. The kittens have been the object of all their affention since bringing them home. There are no signs of any love or attention dwindling.
The girls have suddenly matured and taken responsibility like we hadn’t seen before. What a gift to care for an animal!” – a message from Hayley Reader

Tony had been in the cattery for a while, as had Zion and the staff could not understand how these amazing cats had not been adopted. The sad reality is some of the best older kittens and teens are overlooked and don’t get their second chances. Luckily Chef Rum, and his family visited and noticed these two playing together and their fun antics. They knew they could not separate this pair and decided to adopt them both. Blaze (Tony) and Gingi (Zion) pictured above, are finally in their beautiful forever home. This was a very special adoption as so often cats who are bonded have to be split.
