Outreach Clinic!

Outreach Clinic!

Our Kloof and Highway were privileged to host a successful Outreach Clinic from 4-7 October 2022, sterilising 130 dogs and cats!

The clinic was held during International Animal week which was very fitting as sterilisation is vital to stopping the suffering of unwanted litters and an important part of animal welfare.

The main focus of our Outreach Clinic was on sterilisations however, our Inspectorate Team also had the opportunity to reach people in the Dassenhoek area to provide basic animal health treatment. The Inspectors provided vital education on basic health care for their pets and livestock and advised them on how to report cruelty. An awareness of the growing threat of Rabies to their pets and family was also created.

We are so grateful to our team of staff and volunteers who worked so hard to make such a difference in the lives of 130 animals, no more unwanted litters, no more litters left to fight starvation or suffer cruelty and 130 animals who will be happier and healthier for the rest of their lives.

Our Outreach Clinic would not have been made possible without YOU our donors, sponsors, supporters and members of the public and very supportive community members – we cannot thank you enough for helping our Kloof and Highway SPCA and changing the lives of animals!

Sterilisation Clinic – saving lives one sterilisation at a time!

Sterilisation Clinic – saving lives one sterilisation at a time!

Our Outreach team were able to sterilise 119 animals and prevented many unwanted litters from being born.

Each dog and cat went home with a bag of food and a warm blanket, once they were discharged by our recovery Volunteers.

Our Inspectorate team had the opportunity to educate so many pet owners and spoke to them about the benefits of sterilisation, basic healthcare such as Rabies, internal and external parasites and how to contact our Kloof and Highway SPCA to report cruelty or in case of an emergency.

This would not have been possible without YOUR generous donations – with your support we managed to raise enough funds to pay the costs of our Clinic, thank YOU. We will continue to do Outreach sterilisations in our Clinic for our Community and educate owners.

A special thank you to Mtt Structures International for sponsoring our marquee, and to everyone who worked and volunteered at our Outreach Clinic, we had the most amazing 2-day Outreach Clinic thanks to you all and to everyone who visited our Kloof and Highway SPCA to support us.

Ales For Tails

Ales for Tails Craft Beer, Gin & Music Festival is a passionately-supported fundraiser where home brewers, commercial breweries & distilleries, musicians, food traders and volunteers pull together to support the Kloof and Highway SPCA. This year it was held again on 6 August after a break due to Covid. Thank you to Warren for organising such an amazing event for our animals. To all the brewers who donated their brew and gave of their time, the musicians who shared their talent and all those involved, we are so grateful for your generosity. Thank you to the public who came along and supported this event. Special thanks to Brain Legemaate for the beautiful photographs taken for Ales For Tails.

Killarney Brick & Block Golf Day

On Friday 19th August The Kloof and Highway SPCA Killarney Brick and Block Golf Day was held at Kloof Country Club. Even the cold and slight drizzle could not dampen the day. We had a wonderful turnout and the day was a huge success. We would like to thank every golfer and tee sponsor who took part and made it what it was.

Thank you to Killarney Brick & Block for consistently being one of our biggest supporters. To those donors and supporters who were involved in the very generous prizes and support thank you, you all know who you are. We look forward to seeing you all in 2023!

Thomas More College Fair

Did You Know: World Animal Day

Did You Know: World Animal Day

World Animal Day is celebrated every year on October 4th and is a day that unites all of us advocating for the improvement of animal rights and welfare standards.

The mission statement reads: “through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare.”

THE ORIGIN OF WORLD ANIMAL DAY
The idea of World Animal Day was originated by Heinrich Zimmermann, the German writer and publisher of the magazine Mensch und Hund/Man and Dog. He organized the first World Animal Day on 24 March 1925 in Berlin and moved it to 4 October for the first time in 1929. Initially he found a following only in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia.

Every year Zimmermann worked tirelessly on the promotion of World Animal Day. Finally, in May 1931 at a congress of the world’s animal protection organizations in Florence Italy, his proposal to make 4 October World Animal Day universal, was unanimously accepted. World Animal Day was chosen to be on 4 October as it is the day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology, including animals. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was the founder of the Catholic Franciscan order. Legend has it that Saint Francis was able to talk to animals, which is why he is depicted in numerous paintings in their company. He would also preach to the animals. World Animal Day is the beginning of International Animal Week from 4th – 10th October.

Animals are an extremely important part of our society today, but sadly not all animals are loved and cared for. There are so many that have no homes to call their own. International Animal Week is a perfect opportunity to remind people how important it is to support those animals that need our help.

Our Kloof and Highway SPCA is appealing to all pet owners to be responsible and have their pets neutered and microchipped. Please assist us by doing your part in reducing the number of unwanted and abandoned animals. The statistics have reached such high numbers and sterilisation is vital to alleviate the suffering of unwanted litters. There are also so many animals that are never owner claimed, in fact with cats it is as little as 1 per cent – microchipping your pet will ensure you are reunited if your loved pet is ever lost. Our Kloof and Highway SPCA Clinic team will be holding an Outreach Clinic at our SPCA during this period as we are dedicated to sterilising as many animals as possible. The Inspectorate team will be collecting animals from the Dassenhoek area.
