Phoebe finds her family!

Phoebe finds her family!

One of our regular dog box contestants and her son Gabriel came into the SPCA to visit the cattery.

Gabriel had expressed his wish to adopt a kitten.

Sonia had been a bit concerned as their two dogs had never been around a cat so it was really a visit to have a look initially at the kittens. Gabriel spent some time in the cattery and there was an instant bond with a little tux kitten in K13 named Phoebe. Phoebe looked up into Gabriel’s eyes and locked her gaze on him. She was purring and snuggling into his chest. Phoebe had had a tough start in life, living alone in a factory and was found hiding between equipment and very hungry. Gabriel immediately said – I love her, please can I adopt her mom.

Sonia and Gabriel had to bring in their dogs into the SPCA to check their reaction to cats – quite a challenge with any dog that has not been with cats as the enclosure fronts are glass and the kittens and cats are all staring out! Sonia was particularly worried, however, she need not have been as the dogs were the opposite of aggressive and little Phoebe even came up to the glass with her paw out to Gabriel, once again imploring him to look into her eyes. The adoption could go ahead and Phoebe had found her family!

Today the two dogs and Phoebe are the best of friends, lying together on the couch. Phoebe is so loved and spoilt and loves to lie in Gabriel‘s lap or across Sonia. We are so grateful to those who change an animal’s life by adopting them at a time where we so need good homes.

Cat stuck in tree for a week! – Rescued

Cat stuck in tree for a week! – Rescued

Oliver rescued from the top of a Yucca Plant – he had been stuck for a week!

On Saturday 4 September, our Manager, Barbara Patrick saw a message on her neighbourhood group about a cat that needed to be rescued out of a ‘tree’ as it had been there for a week.

Barbara immediately offered assistance from our SPCA and then phoned to say that our SPCA would respond within 10 minutes. Inspector Petros Simamane, Field Officer Doctor Ntombile and Barbara left to rescue the black and white cat. It was not an easy rescue as the cat was at the top of a ‘Yucca’ plant and this was against a wooden fence that was not stable so the Inspectors were unable to use our long ladder.

Inspector Petros and Field Officer Doctor came equipped with whatever they might need and asked the homeowner for his pool net so they could extend our equipment. The cat was calling and we were sure that it knew everyone was there to rescue it.

Inspector Petros and Field Officer Doctor worked together gently using our net and a control pole to try and coax the cat, it took some time and thankfully the cat was rescued and immediately put safely into a cage. A few days prior, a lady had come through to make a lost report for a black and white cat missing from the same area ….it had been missing since the 26 August.

She had been checking in regularly about any news on her much loved missing cat and sent through photographs. The family were distraught and the cat’s sibling was also missing him. Thus there was hope that this was the missing kitty, Oliver.  After telephoning the number on the lost report, the cat was taken back to our SPCA, it was not injured but was so thin, very hungry and did not stop eating the bowl of food we gave it, until the bowl was finished.

When Katherine Paley and her daughter, Sarah, came in to see if it was their cat….they were beyond pleased to see it was their Oliver, he was so happy to see them and even happier to be reunited with his brother when they got home.

Thank YOU to the member of our community who saw Oliver, we are so glad he was rescued unharmed and went home. If your pet is missing, please let the Kloof and Highway SPCA know immediately and if you find a stray please let our SPCA know so that we can reunite missing pets. We also recommend microchipping your pet as this makes it so much easier to find the owners when strays come in.

So few of the animals coming into our SPCA are microchipped and it is heart breaking to see them waiting for their owners and not being owner claimed. Please also make sure all your details are correctly registered and updated with the microchip company as we have had animals with chips but no registered details coming up.

Some things are just meant to be!

Some things are just meant to be!

Luka and Axel were the last of their litter.

Their siblings had found homes, and their mother had been absorbed into the SPCA family and become a beloved resident cat. But the two brothers had so far been overlooked.  No one showed any interest in these special souls.

This changed, when a couple, terribly heartsore from the loss of their beloved cat last year, finally convinced themselves that they were missing some feline character in their small family. They wanted to help give a home to a cat or two to honour their second wedding anniversary. Luka’s distinctive black stripe down his head and back first caught their eye months before when Kerry was working on the murals. They visited; the kittens played, and played, and played, and everyone fell in love. Luka and Axel were now a lot bigger than when Kerry had first seen them and the decision was made that they needed to become a part of the family. Luka and Axel went home.

It was immediately apparent that despite their familial links, the two had very distinctive personalities. Luka needed a new name: ‘Paintbrush’ and ‘Brush’ were bandied around until the ever-versatile ‘Bean’ was chosen. Bean settled down as a gentle, clumsy, talkative lovebug. Axel, who kept his name to suit his fiery personality, soon showed his independent, active, loud, ‘beserker’ character.

Once they had settled a little and charmed the resident dogs, Bean and Axel were slowly introduced to the Outside, somewhere they had never fully explored before. Grass was not what Bean expected and was generally avoided at first. Both brothers now enjoy the Outside – perhaps Axel a little more than Bean – and relish taking strolls around the garden with their canine-human-feline pack.

Despite Bean’s clumsiness, it is Axel who has the highest broken glass count so far (3). Bean and Axel have recently learned to show their love by kneading and now regularly ‘bake cookies’ when they go to bed. The current bed-time routine includes violent bathing, where the two brothers enthusiastically clean each other, which inevitably turns into a tackle/fight match. As the saying goes, there is nothing a cat enjoys more than to annoy other cats.

Now, a few months after arriving home, Axel pursues his culinary studies, thievery, and purring skills. Bean hopes to in future become an Art Critic, conversationalist, and professional sleeper, and is well on his way to achieving his dreams.

Thank you to Kerry and Chris for giving Axel and Bean such a wonderful home and for seeing how special it is to adopt the older kittens (teenagers).
