From the Clinic: Bingo

From the Clinic: Bingo

Bingo was surrendered by his owner to the Kloof and Highway SPCA at the beginning of July and quickly stole the hearts of our staff.

Bingo was brought in by his owner because he could no longer take care of him.

He had tried to continue to care for his beloved dog after losing his job but sadly his circumstances had changed and there was no light at the end of the tunnel and he knew what he needed to do was make sure Bingo was taken care of. On admission, Bingo was matted, underweight, and lethargic but still had a wagging tail and a happy face. Our Clinic vet, Dr. Bangay found that he had biliary and would need medical care. Due to his dehydration, he was immediately put on a drip and was given the necessary medication. Bingo spent time in the clinic and soon perked up and was fed Hills Nutrition AD. He was given a trim and a warm bath. He started to feel much better and his big personality started to shine through! He is a happy little dog who loves going for walks and stops to say Hi to everyone.

Once Bingo was better, he was put up for adoption. This sweet-natured little dog needed someone who would understand him and give him the loving care he needed. Caroline Durrett‘s daughter told her mom about Bingo and Caroline, who had lost a beloved Maltese called Buffy some time ago, had not been ready to adopt another dog for some time. Her other little Maltese, Lulu needed company as did Caroline and her family, and when she met Bingo she knew straight away that the time was right to add a new family member

In Caroline‘s words, “Bingo has adopted us as if we always had him. He gets on so well with Lulu, my little Maltese although he still does not like to enter a bathroom. He loves everyone who visits and greets us all with his front paws waving. Bingo and Lulu sleep together on our bed at night and just love each other. Macayla, my granddaughter spends many happy moments with him and my husband has also grown so fond of Bingo who goes straight to him for a cuddle when he returns home every evening. Bingo loves to hare around the garden, chase the ball and any cat that ventures into the garden. I miss my Buffy terribly but when I met Bingo, I knew the time was right to adopt and I am so very happy I waited for our special little Bingo!”

Bingo has found his happy ending with his new owners who love him dearly.

Happy adoption stories

Happy adoption stories

Boxer waited so long until Thomas George Reid found him!

Boxer waited in our kennels for so long and then one day an adorable little boy visited with his Mother, looking to adopt a puppy.

Thomas took one look at Boxer and forgot about the puppies – he was in love with this little tubby min pin who was over 4 years old. After a successful meet and greet with their other dog, Pepper, Boxer was adopted.

Boxer is so loved by Thomas and his family and has also brought a new lease on life to their 8 year old dog, Pepper, who was used to being an only dog. Boxer and Pepper spend hours playing in the garden. Gillian, Thomas‘s mom says that Boxer is already a very much loved family member and they are so thrilled he was waiting to be chosen by Thomas!

Precious little Crystal!

Crystal has gone from being discarded as a small kitten with her siblings to being a doted on and much loved pet.

Mashooda Hoosen had been wanting a white kitten for a while and saw the shared post on Facebook about some of the kittens and cats at our Kloof and Highway SPCA. Crystal, although gorgeous and loving, had not been adopted and was waiting for her forever home. Mashooda visited with her family who were so enamored with Crystal and decided there and then this was the kitten they were waiting for. Crystal was now a lot bigger than when she first arrived and Mashooda could not believe such an adorable kitten had waited for a home.

Crystal is the first pet that the children have had and they are very devoted to ensuring she is well cared for. Mashooda says her co workers now think of her as a crazy cat lover as she never stops talking about her Crystal and the children cannot wait to get home after school to greet their little friend. Mashooda‘s mom is home during the day so Crystal is definitely part of this loving family!

Benson started off his life as a little kitten with his sibling, owned by a young gentleman.

The kitten was named Zena (at this stage he thought it was a female) and the sibling was named Tyson.

At around one he became very social and started wandering around the neighbourhood. The charismatic cat spent more and more time at a lady called Mandy‘s house. Mandy and her daughter showered him with love and neutered him. Mandy said that in the beginning he was not the cat he is today as he seemed to mistrust and needed time to trust others. This is common in unneutered cats as when they wander people are often cruel to them and they become wary of humans. Mandy took this cat in and named him Brian, he was very loved and content.

Sadly, Mandy‘s personal circumstances changed and she had to leave Brian with a friend and work colleague in September 2021. Brian, who is very much a free spirit and was clearly missing Mandy, escaped on the second night. The friend who was caring for him was frantic and looked all over and put out lost reports on social media, around the neighbourhood and with our Kloof and Highway SPCA. Mandy herself visited the area and drove around for months looking for Brian. The person caring for Brian also suffered the loss of her home during the floods. Brian was brought into the Kloof and Highway SPCA recently as an unwanted stray.

Brian was lost for so long that any lost report made initially would not be current. Fortunately, someone had recalled a Facebook post she had saved on her phone and took the time to go back in the archived lost reports to double check if there was a lost report around that time. Indeed, there was; the social media post, lost report, pictures of the cat matched the cat brought in as a stray all this time later. The markings on the legs were exact. Mandy came in to visit Brian who the Kloof and Highway SPCA staff had named Boi and was in tears as she so wanted to take him home but was unable to as where she was now staying did not allow cats. She put word out all over about Brian needing to be adopted and in the end a friend of the original owner heard about the plight of this cat and decided to go and meet him, with the possibility of adopting him.

Etienne adopted Brian/Boi and named him Benson and had this to say, “I must say Boi stole my heart the moment I looked into those sparkly eyes saying, “please take me home!” To my surprise he settled in immediately with no issues at all, gets on perfectly with the yorkie and seems to love his new home. He lies on my bed most of the day sleeping and in the evenings has a ball running around, playing with his toys or cuddling up for some TLC and heavy purring. He has such a soft friendly nature and is adored by all who have visited him. I am truly grateful for this beautiful fur baby addition to the family and excited for the wonderful times that lie ahead.”

Mandy is so grateful to Etienne for adopting her beloved Brian (now Benson). This is a story of hope which highlights the fact that cats can be so misunderstood and end up lost, striving to survive on the streets, getting into fights whilst trying to establish territory as they have no home, being treated cruelly by most whilst looking to be accepted and shown love and kindness. Sadly, the world is not very kind to cats and they are often misunderstood – there are literally thousands of cats just like Benson who never get their happy ending. The story of Benson is one that encourages the public to firstly neuter or sterilise their cats (from 4 months please) and to microchip them to ensure they are reunited if lost.

So many beautiful tame cats are taken to SPCA’s as strays and never owner claimed. To those who have lost a cat, never stop looking or creating awareness and always check at SPCA’s. Keep your lost report current by resubmitting if your cat is still missing after 3 months as Benson‘s story shows that often cats are brought in months later. Go well, gorgeous Benson!

Cat stuck in tree – Soxy

Cat stuck in tree – Soxy

On 2nd August, while everyone else was settling in for the night, Trainee Field Officer Sipho Mkhize was high up in a tree saving a cat!

After receiving a frantic call from Soxy’s owner Field Officer Sipho was sent to retrieve the distressed Soxy.

In the pitch dark Field Officer Sipho, with the help of a neighbor, climbed up a ladder and then up the tall tree where he managed to bring Soxy down to safety. A special thank you to Dean for assisting Trainee Field Officer Sipho and returning Soxy to her owners. A clearly relieved owner was delighted to have Soxy safe and sound.

Rainbow after the storm

Rainbow after the storm

There is always a rainbow after the storm

Field Officer Philani Nzama responded to a call for a stray goat that had been found in the Bothas Hill area after the terrible storm at the end of May.

We suspect that the goat was separated from his mom during the storm and do not know how long he has been alone. He was clearly enamored with Philani who rescued him and took him through to our SPCA where he spent time in a kennel under a heating lamp with a warm bed and a full tummy.

This very special little rescue was then sent up to our Clinic where the our very own Vet, Dr Nic decided to give the little goat that stole everyone’s heart a home on his farm. A little ray of hope amidst the tragedy that surrounds us so often!

Thank you to our staff and volunteers for working even harder during the storms and thank YOU to our supporters who ensure we are able to continue our work even through the most trying times.

Justice for Rex!

Justice for Rex!

The Kloof and Highway SPCA received a complaint of a dog tied up on a short rope in the Embo area and Inspector Israel Silevu was dispatched on Saturday, 19 September 2020.

WARNING: GRAPHIC & DISTURING IMAGE BELOW.

When Inspector Silevu arrived at the property in Riverview, Embo, he found a dog tied up with a short rope that had created severe wounds around the neck area. He found that the living conditions were not acceptable as the dog did not have adequate shelter or access to food and water and was suffering immensely due to the untreated wound on its neck.

The dog, a Male Tan and White Africanis was named Rex. Rex‘s owner was not at home, however a family member who was, gave him the owners contact number. Inspector Silevu contacted the owner and explained that Rex needed immediate veterinary attention and that his living conditions were unactable. The owner did not want Inspector Silevu to take Rex to the Kloof and Highway SPCA for treatment even after Inspector Silevu explained the severity of the pain and suffering Rex was feeling and that he would be prosecuted, he declined and was adamant he would treat his own dog and did not care if he was prosecuted.

Luckily the family member who was home with Rex took pity on him. He understood that he had to take action in order to help Rex and allowed Inspector Silevu to remove Rex and take him to the Kloof and Highway SPCA. Rex was taken to our clinic and examined by our vet at the time Dr. Ramnanam who found that Rex had a laceration around his neck which was approximately 4cms deep cutting into the skin and muscular tissue, leaving the whole neck raw, infected and bleeding. This was caused due to a rope that was tied to Rex’s neck when he was a puppy and never loosened as he grew.

Rex also had a deep laceration to the sheath of his penis as well as broken teeth and a severe flea infestation. Due to the severity of Rex‘s injuries it was evident that he had been suffering unnecessarily with open infected wounds, the rope cutting deeper into the wound around his neck, broken teeth and no veterinary care. All these issues would have caused continuous pain and suffering whenever Rex moved. Sadly, the decision was made to humanly euthanise Rex due to the severity of his injuries and a case of animal cruelty was opened up against his owner by Inspector Silevu.

After 2 years of court visits as well as Inspector Silevu continuously following up on his case after it had been “withdrawn” and being shifted from pillar to post as well as hitting several dead ends and not being taken seriously – on 23 May 2022 JUSTICE WAS SERVED FOR REX!

The accused, Mr. Bongani Shabalala was found guilty as charged and sentenced to 12 months in prison or a R4000 fine and a denial of ownership of animals for 5 years.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA would like to thank the Prosecutor and Judge who understood the severity of the offense as well as acting swiftly and ensuring justice for Rex. As the Judge had asked Mr. Shabalala “If this was your child you would not let it suffer?” The Judge also commended Inspector Silevu for following up on his case from start to finish and not giving up as this shows we are dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals as well as thanking the Kloof and Highway SPCA for our work ensuring justice was served for Rex!
