Honey melts Bernie’s heart!

Honey melts Bernie’s heart!

A beautiful Africanis dog was displaced during the July looting.

Some kind neighborhood watch people spotted her and noticed she was lost. They spent weeks coaxing the frightened and thin dog. Finally they caught her and took her to Kloof and Highway SPCA.

One of our long standing dog walker volunteers, Bernie, spotted her in the stray section and was drawn to her gentle nature.  Bernie started visiting her in kennel 38 and bringing her treats and the dog became excited to see her. Bernie was very keen to take her for a walk and asked if the dog would be vaccinated soon as the dog walkers walk the dogs in the adoption section, not the stray section and are only allowed to walk a dog if it is fully vaccinated. As soon as the dog was vaccinated, Bernie took her for a walk and the dog suddenly jumped up and put her front paws around her arms, holding on so tight Bernie had to pry her legs off.

It seemed as though she was asking for help. A strong bond developed between these two and soon the dog, now named Honey was off to her new home away from the dangerous streets. Honey is the most loving dog who is very intelligent. She is going to dog training and has learnt a few commands which she picked up extremely quickly.

She loves her new home where she has a new soft warm bed and lots of toys. She knows she is safe in her yard and home and gets locked inside when there is no one at home. She seems to know she is safe inside and makes no attempt to escape when left alone. Bernie commented, “She has been a blessing and has brought so much joy to the home. She has lots of energy and entertains with her bouts of racing around the garden and flinging her toys in the air. She is a much loved dog. Every animal deserves a loving home where they feel safe and secure.”

Thank you Bernie for noticing Honey and for giving her such a wonderful forever home.

Some things are just meant to be!

Some things are just meant to be!

Luka and Axel were the last of their litter.

Their siblings had found homes, and their mother had been absorbed into the SPCA family and become a beloved resident cat. But the two brothers had so far been overlooked.  No one showed any interest in these special souls.

This changed, when a couple, terribly heartsore from the loss of their beloved cat last year, finally convinced themselves that they were missing some feline character in their small family. They wanted to help give a home to a cat or two to honour their second wedding anniversary. Luka’s distinctive black stripe down his head and back first caught their eye months before when Kerry was working on the murals. They visited; the kittens played, and played, and played, and everyone fell in love. Luka and Axel were now a lot bigger than when Kerry had first seen them and the decision was made that they needed to become a part of the family. Luka and Axel went home.

It was immediately apparent that despite their familial links, the two had very distinctive personalities. Luka needed a new name: ‘Paintbrush’ and ‘Brush’ were bandied around until the ever-versatile ‘Bean’ was chosen. Bean settled down as a gentle, clumsy, talkative lovebug. Axel, who kept his name to suit his fiery personality, soon showed his independent, active, loud, ‘beserker’ character.

Once they had settled a little and charmed the resident dogs, Bean and Axel were slowly introduced to the Outside, somewhere they had never fully explored before. Grass was not what Bean expected and was generally avoided at first. Both brothers now enjoy the Outside – perhaps Axel a little more than Bean – and relish taking strolls around the garden with their canine-human-feline pack.

Despite Bean’s clumsiness, it is Axel who has the highest broken glass count so far (3). Bean and Axel have recently learned to show their love by kneading and now regularly ‘bake cookies’ when they go to bed. The current bed-time routine includes violent bathing, where the two brothers enthusiastically clean each other, which inevitably turns into a tackle/fight match. As the saying goes, there is nothing a cat enjoys more than to annoy other cats.

Now, a few months after arriving home, Axel pursues his culinary studies, thievery, and purring skills. Bean hopes to in future become an Art Critic, conversationalist, and professional sleeper, and is well on his way to achieving his dreams.

Thank you to Kerry and Chris for giving Axel and Bean such a wonderful home and for seeing how special it is to adopt the older kittens (teenagers).

Cardi – Happy Adoptions

Cardi – Happy Adoptions

Tossed out a moving vehicle, only to survive and be adopted into a wonderful, loving home!

Kittens and cats are often treated cruelly, with one of the sad realities being that many are discarded as rubbish or tortured, living a hard life on the streets and suffering daily.

One such kitten arrived at our SPCA, having been tossed out a vehicle with her siblings as a quick way to get rid of them. This little terrified tortoiseshell kitten had the will to live, having survived a traumatic ordeal and deserved to be loved and shown she mattered.

Cardi, as we named her, was put in enclosure K3 with two lively ginger and white male kittens who immediately took to her and the three became playmates in no time. Cardi remained fearful of people, however she would purr in your lap contentedly if you were one of the few who took the time to gain her trust.

Cardi was overlooked by most people as she would hide away, however, one afternoon Angie arrived with her mum Beth Buckland (88 Years old) and her brother Tony for a social to find a kitten or cat to adopt. Beth, who is an avid cat lover, sadly broke both her hips during lockdown.

Two hip replacements later, she is now confined to a wheelchair. Beth lives with her son Tony. Tony and Beth spent time with a few of the kittens and cats up for adoption. That day, Cardi chose them to become her new family. Cardi, now renamed Roxie, is living her best life! She is still shy and wary of strangers but very loving and as her new family comment, “she is beyond adorable”. Roxie snuggles up in the night with Beth, purring and sleeping contentedly. She has become a fine, entertaining, loving little companion to both Beth and Tony.
