Lilly the pool rescue

Lilly the pool rescue

On Sunday 12 December 2021 after hours Inspector Israel Silevu was dispatched to collect a sick stray for treatment and safe keeping at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

The stray dog, a Swiss Shepherd Cross had fallen into a pool and was rescued by the caring family that lived on the property.

It was clear she had not been taken care of for a very long time and was immediately taken to our clinic where she was found to be both underweight and in desperate need of a groom. Throughout the next month the caring family who had rescued her decided they would like her to be part of their family and they named her Lilly. Once Lilly had a good bath and groom we started to notice what a gentle personality she had, something that was hard to determine before as her body language was that of a dog in pain and discomfort. Lilly joined her new family and we have had a wonderful update from her new mom Liane:

“This is Lilly on day 2 of being at home. This is her favorite toy. She is loving her new bug that we bought her. She gets on well with my two other little seniors. She is not used to the cats yet, but we are slowly introducing them. Otherwise she is an angel. She sleeps inside all day and night. She goes outside with the other dogs and the kids during the day and spends time in the garden. We gave her a good bath on Saturday and played with her today with the hose pipe. Who knew, she loves water. We have noticed she is terrified of being locked outside. Yay for us because none of our animals are outside animals. She has an absolutely beautiful nature. Takes her meds with no problem at all and has fitted into our tribe with no fuss at all. We just adore her and I hope she will be very very happy with us. Thank you for letting us adopt her. Regards Liane, Amanda and Ryan

Thank YOU Liane and family for adopting Lilly and thank you to Dog Guru Grooming for grooming Lilly and being so patient and gentle with her making it a stress free experience.

Liane Mullholand who adopted her commented: “It was a really tough decision to adopt Lilly simply because our futures are so uncertain. But she has won our hearts and is officially part of our family so where we go, she goes. What I love most about her is her gentle nature with humans which shocks me to my core considering humans were the ones who neglected and abused her so terribly. Oh and she loves the car. Double bonus when we finally get down to the beach with her. She takes her meds without a any problem. My beautiful old sausage dog shares her brand new bed every now and then. It will take time for her to adjust to the our tiny cross breed dog and the cats and the birds but the fact that she now even notices them shows us that she is feeling much better. Her painful arthritis is under control. She stands and walks painlessly now. We will be taking her for long walks on the weekend and my goodness she is so good on the leash. Her skins has healed beautifully as well and we use the ointment only when she becomes itchy. The redness has gone completely. Thanks again Kloof and Highway SPCA for bringing her back from the brink of death and nursing her through two months of intensive treatment.”

Persistence pays off – Dora & Petra

Persistence pays off – Dora & Petra

For 2 years Inspector Petra Abrams had been calling on a beautiful dog in the Cliffdale area who had lived her life on a very short chain.

Inspector Abrams issued the owner with a warning, then gave advice and assistance to put the dog on a running chain as the fencing was bad in the rural area where the owner stayed and it was understandable that the dog could not run free with no fenced off area.

Inspector Abrams kept visiting and helping by taking food regularly and a collar for the dog. Inspector Abrams felt the dog was not having any quality of life and wanted the owner to surrender her. The owner did not want to surrender her, but still Inspector Petra Abrams persisted in calling on this lovely girl – Dora.

Then the unbelievable happened and Petra managed to persuade the owner to hand the dog over to us. After a stay in our kennels the bond between Petra and Dora grew and the day came when Inspector Abrams adopted Dora.

This happy ending has a very important lesson that every animal matters. Inspector Petra Abrams never gave up on Dora, whom she adopted on 11th October and now Dora leads a free life full of love and all the attention she deserves.

Lucy from the Valley

Lucy from the Valley

While doing a one day Outreach in the remote area of Inanda Valley we came across a sad case of a gorgeous brindle africanus living her life on the end of a rope attached to a pole.

The rope was so short that she would twist herself around the post to the point she could not move. Her bed was a slab of cement with old bags.

Through all this she still maintained the happiest demeanor. Due to her boredom she continuously chased her own tail which was most distressing to see. Once the Inspector spoke to the owner it was apparent they no longer wanted her. Once in our care her personality bloomed. We called her Lucy. She no longer chased her tail and loved her new home where she was no longer constrained on a rope. Lucy was adopted by a lovely family whose two children could not wait to play with her. We are so grateful that Lucy got her second chance.

Cat stuck in tree for a week! – Rescued

Cat stuck in tree for a week! – Rescued

Oliver rescued from the top of a Yucca Plant – he had been stuck for a week!

On Saturday 4 September, our Manager, Barbara Patrick saw a message on her neighbourhood group about a cat that needed to be rescued out of a ‘tree’ as it had been there for a week.

Barbara immediately offered assistance from our SPCA and then phoned to say that our SPCA would respond within 10 minutes. Inspector Petros Simamane, Field Officer Doctor Ntombile and Barbara left to rescue the black and white cat. It was not an easy rescue as the cat was at the top of a ‘Yucca’ plant and this was against a wooden fence that was not stable so the Inspectors were unable to use our long ladder.

Inspector Petros and Field Officer Doctor came equipped with whatever they might need and asked the homeowner for his pool net so they could extend our equipment. The cat was calling and we were sure that it knew everyone was there to rescue it.

Inspector Petros and Field Officer Doctor worked together gently using our net and a control pole to try and coax the cat, it took some time and thankfully the cat was rescued and immediately put safely into a cage. A few days prior, a lady had come through to make a lost report for a black and white cat missing from the same area ….it had been missing since the 26 August.

She had been checking in regularly about any news on her much loved missing cat and sent through photographs. The family were distraught and the cat’s sibling was also missing him. Thus there was hope that this was the missing kitty, Oliver.  After telephoning the number on the lost report, the cat was taken back to our SPCA, it was not injured but was so thin, very hungry and did not stop eating the bowl of food we gave it, until the bowl was finished.

When Katherine Paley and her daughter, Sarah, came in to see if it was their cat….they were beyond pleased to see it was their Oliver, he was so happy to see them and even happier to be reunited with his brother when they got home.

Thank YOU to the member of our community who saw Oliver, we are so glad he was rescued unharmed and went home. If your pet is missing, please let the Kloof and Highway SPCA know immediately and if you find a stray please let our SPCA know so that we can reunite missing pets. We also recommend microchipping your pet as this makes it so much easier to find the owners when strays come in.

So few of the animals coming into our SPCA are microchipped and it is heart breaking to see them waiting for their owners and not being owner claimed. Please also make sure all your details are correctly registered and updated with the microchip company as we have had animals with chips but no registered details coming up.

Golf Course Stray

Golf Course Stray

Annie was living on the golf course for over 2 weeks and was being fed by concerned residents.

Vanessa Bircher was one of the residents who initially found her, fed her and felt for the plight of this gorgeous dog.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA were alerted to assist and rescue her. Our Inspectors caught her and she was taken to our kennels. She was in Kennel 53 and Vanessa came and visited her 3 times a week, bringing treats for her and the other dogs in the kennels. She formed a bond with April, as she was then named and started walking her. Vanessa had not intended to adopt Annie as she already had her own dogs at home and one jealous rescue. She was eagerly awaiting the day someone showed an interest and chose Annie.

Sadly time went on no one had shown an interest in adopting Annie and Vanessa was feeling desperate for her.

After a lot of soul searching and knowing that she was probably Annie’s only second chance Vanessa made the decision to adopt her. This was after consultation with animal behaviourist Daniel Stewart who is going to work with Annie and her other dogs to ensure a happy transition for them all.

Vanessa commented: “When I knew no one else was going to come forward and adopt her, I made the decision that Annie (named after my Mom), was coming home with me…..Annie, you knew you were going home with me from day one! I guess some things are just meant to be!”

Jasmine: Shongweni Snare Rescue

Jasmine: Shongweni Snare Rescue

On 1 June our Inspectorate Department was notified of a dog caught in a snare in the Shongweni area.

Field Officers Eric and Philani Nzama immediately made their way to the area in search of the dog. Once she was located, they began their rescue mission by gaining the trust of the dog who was cowering behind a tree in fear and trapped.

With patience the inspectors managed to free the dog and remove the snare. The dog was then transported to our clinic to be checked by our Vet. Fortunately all turned out well and the dog who is now named Jasmine is now in our kennels and up for adoption. She is just the sweetest, most loving and gentle girl and most deserving of a home. We all love her dearly.

If our inspectors had not got her from the snare, she would have been be in the cold weather for days, freezing, hungry and scared – instead she now has heaps of food and is safe in our kennels under a heating lamp.
