Did you know that Natal is currently experiencing an increase in rabies cases?

At The Kloof and Highway SPCA from 5th January to 5th March we had 8 dogs and 1 cat test positive for rabies, a total of 9 cases in 60 days as compared to only 3 in the year of 2020.

In KZN there have been 2 human deaths this year and that is 2 too many. It is imperative to check all your animals are up to date with their rabies vaccines. We also ask you to please be careful when catching a stray.

Try and have minimum contact with the dog’s saliva and if you feel at all threatened or unsafe rather call the SPCA to assist. Rabies is not always your typical aggressive animal frothing at the mouth. Rabies is a fascinating disease that has many disguises.

Unless you are very experienced with the disease never assume and if exposed seek immediate treatment and do not delay.

SPCA Hero – Mondli

SPCA Hero – Mondli

There are different definitions of a hero, but in our eyes this person is a hero.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA is only able to uphold our mandate because of the silent heroes, the behind-the-scenes heroes and the ones who do the invisible work.

This gentleman is on his feet all day dealing with the public. He greets each person as if they were the first; he thanks them on behalf of the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

He carries and loads and off loads sometimes heavy items. He can work in 38 degrees or pouring rain, but his attitude does not change. Some people are very rude, and others can be downright nasty, but he remains the same. These donations are what generate the very important funding for our Village Green and Thrift Shops. Without donations we have nothing.

Mondli is our SPCA hero. Quiet and assuming he is loyal, responsible and dedicated to his job and most importantly he has moral integrity. Thank you Mondli.

A tough decision

When Field Officer Philani Nzama bought in a Labrador-cross mom with 2 puppies, one look at the mom and we knew she and her pups deserved a special home. 

With two bottom teeth jutting out every time she smiled, we couldn’t help falling in love with her. Sadly the previous owners could no longer afford to keep them all and made the responsible decision to hand them over to our SPCA. 

The mom and pups were made to feel completely at home in our kennels, with heating lamps, warm bedding, nutritious meals and treats. Luckily it wasn’t long before all three were adopted by caring families who would be able to give them their own special homes. 

Thank you to their new owners for choosing to adopt from our Kloof and Highway SPCA.

On the 1st and 2nd of August 2020, a dedicated team from the Kloof & Highway SPCA comprised of 9 staff members, 6 qualified Inspectors, 3 Field Officers and an Inspectorate Assistant headed out to monitor the welfare and slaughtering of approximately 1175 sheep, 17 goats and 53 cattle during the Muslim Festival Eid al-Adha which means “feast of the sacrifice”  better known as Qurbani.

The task entailed monitoring 6 sites to check transportation and off-loading of animals, welfare of animals in holding pens, handling and slaughtering of animals to ensure that all animals were treated humanely and that no animal was skinned before the required bleeding out time had expired. The team were on site from 7:30 until 16:00 each day and several pre-check inspections were conducted at each site prior to Qurbani.

The Kloof & Highway SPCA Inspectorate would like to thank the members of public who alert us to slaughtering in residential areas. Traditional and religious slaughtering is allowed if a permit is obtained from eThekwini Health department, (031) 311 3690 / (031) 311 3555. If our SPCA is notified of any scheduled slaughtering in our area, an Inspector is dispatched to visit the premises, check on the welfare of the animals, provide advice and educate owners to have the slaughter done as quickly and humanely as possible. The Inspector then returns on the day of slaughtering to monitor the event.
