Cars for cats and canines

Cars for cats and canines

The Smoking Tyres Club hosted Cars on the Green in a bid to help the Kloof and Highway SPCA, who have many animals looking for homes.

The Smoking Tyres Car Club initiated the charity drive, joined by the Lotus 7 Club and the Mini Owners Club of KZN. Classic, street rods, vintage, custom, Lotus 7, minis and modern did a charity run on Sunday and parked on the beautiful grounds of the Kloof and Highway SPCA adjacent to the tea garden and nursery area for an open day.

All the thrift stores were open and singer Belinda Dolphin was the entertainment. Various foods were on sale, there were lucky draws, and Roberta Alessandri models did a fashion show at 10.30am with styling by Kevin Ellis.

Ellis also taught some impromptu dance to kids who wanted to learn great moves and get onto the stage. What a great success and THANK YOU to everyone who joined and supported our SPCA.

Sterilising your pets

Sterilising your pets

GOOD REASONS TO STERILISE YOUR PET

Being a responsible pet owner means sterilising your pets. Why?

Sterilisation saves lives as there are less unwanted litters and fewer animals who end up in the welfare system needing to be rehomed. Spaying reduces the risk of mammary tumors; eliminates the risk of tumors in the uterus, ovaries and cervix; and prevents other serious issues such as uterus infections. Male neutering reduces the risk of perennial tumors and testicular cancer. You also won’t have to deal with spraying cats, cats and dogs going on heat, prowling of cats and dogs and fighting between males.

  • They will be healthier and live longer, better lives
  • They will be better companions
  • They are less likely to roam
  • They are less likely to fight
  • Females are less likely to get uterus infections/cancer
  • Males are less likely to get enlarged prostrates/cancer
  • Males will be less likely to be aggressive towards other animals and humans
  • Males are less likely to: mount people or objects, and urinating to mark their territory
  • There will be less diseases, less cruelty to animals and healthier environments

You can have your pet sterlised at the Kloof & Highway SPCA Clinic. Contact our team to find out more about sterlisation by emailing clinic@kloofspca.co.za

Saving the Donkeys!

Saving the Donkeys!

On the 11th March the Kloof and Highway SPCA, together with Volunteers from our community, met 36 donkeys, who were admitted into our care.

These donkeys were destined to be slaughtered for the cruel donkey skin trade.

Fortunately for these donkeys, a vigilant member of the public immediately sensed something was not right when she saw the donkeys being transported on crowded trucks. Her swift action in reporting her concerns to the closest police station and SPCA, resulted in 101 donkeys being taken into safe keeping. When the owner of the donkeys failed to lay claim to them, the court ruled that the donkeys become the property of the NSPCA.

These beautiful donkeys, which included foals, arrived in a sad state; their emotional well-being must have been at an all-time low as they had been moved so many times. They were unused to the feeling of the warmth of the human touch; humans had let them down. They were traumatised and yet there was a glimmer of hope that they would trust again. We have been treating them all for chronic parasite infestation, worms, lack of the correct nutrition as well as the wounds to their legs and in some cases their necks. One donkey had a tight rubber shackle around its leg, which had to be cut and removed whilst under sedation.

Every donkey has received a rabies inoculation, de-worming and has been micro chipped. Each donkey has had a thorough Vet check and the staff spend time with them on a daily basis, checking on their progress. Our staff , volunteers, wonderful members of our community and the public have visited, cared for and spoilt these donkeys and we have had an outpouring of support for them…. to see their condition improve has been absolutely amazing.

Some of the donkeys have already been adopted into loving homes, and others will be homed as their conditions improve. The awful fate and death that they were destined for is already a distant memory for these special donkeys.

Thank YOU to everyone who has helped us help our donkeys, no animal deserves to be exploited in such an inhumane manner.

Rabies in KZN

Rabies in KZN

Did you know that Natal is currently experiencing an increase in rabies cases?

At The Kloof and Highway SPCA from 5th January to 5th March we had 8 dogs and 1 cat test positive for rabies, a total of 9 cases in 60 days as compared to only 3 in the year of 2020.

In KZN there have been 2 human deaths this year and that is 2 too many. It is imperative to check all your animals are up to date with their rabies vaccines. We also ask you to please be careful when catching a stray.

Try and have minimum contact with the dog’s saliva and if you feel at all threatened or unsafe rather call the SPCA to assist. Rabies is not always your typical aggressive animal frothing at the mouth. Rabies is a fascinating disease that has many disguises.

Unless you are very experienced with the disease never assume and if exposed seek immediate treatment and do not delay.

Eid al-Adha – Qurbani

Eid al-Adha – Qurbani

Qurbani August 2020

Dedicated to the cause. Dedicated to uphold anti-cruelty.

On the 1st and 2nd of August 2020, a dedicated team from the Kloof & Highway SPCA comprised of 9 staff members, 6 qualified Inspectors, 3 Field Officers and an Inspectorate Assistant headed out to monitor the welfare and slaughtering of approximately 1175 sheep, 17 goats and 53 cattle during the Muslim Festival Eid al-Adha which means “feast of the sacrifice”  better known as Qurbani.

The task entailed monitoring 6 sites to check transportation and off-loading of animals, welfare of animals in holding pens, handling and slaughtering of animals to ensure that all animals were treated humanely and that no animal was skinned before the required bleeding out time had expired. The team were on site from 7:30 until 16:00 each day and several pre-check inspections were conducted at each site prior to Qurbani.

The Kloof & Highway SPCA Inspectorate would like to thank the members of public who alert us to slaughtering in residential areas. Traditional and religious slaughtering is allowed if a permit is obtained from eThekwini Health department, (031) 311 3690 / (031) 311 3555. If our SPCA is notified of any scheduled slaughtering in our area, an Inspector is dispatched to visit the premises, check on the welfare of the animals, provide advice and educate owners to have the slaughter done as quickly and humanely as possible. The Inspector then returns on the day of slaughtering to monitor the event.

For all animal welfare concerns, complaints and animals in distress, please contact the Kloof & Highway SPCA Inspectorate during office hours on (031) 764 1212, email: controller@kloofspca.co.za / inspectorate@kloofspca.co.za or for after-hours emergencies phone our emergency number on 073 335 9322.

Continued Outreach Support

Continued Outreach Support

The worst effects of lockdown has been seen among the poorer communities where many lost their only source of income.

From June to August 2020 Kloof & Highway SPCA Inspectorate team assisted by our manager and colleagues, delivered 12 truckloads of pet food and blankets, to many disadvantaged communities, where animal owners are battling financially including, Inchanga, Cliffdale, Inanda Valley, Molweni, Mophela, KwaXimba and Bux Farm, bordering on Cliffdale.

Thanks to our gracious donors, we could distribute basic food items to the animal owners to help feed them and their families. Over 1200 animals were inspected, some dewormed and treated for ticks and fleas, as well as fly bites. Animal owners were educated on basic animal care and advised about the importance of vaccinations and sterilisation. The team also distributed books and pamphlets on Rabies, animal diseases and how to care for dogs and cats. These all included our SPCA’s emergency no. and as a result, 56 animals were signed over to our SPCA and 15 animals received veterinary treatment.

Our goal is to sterilise as many animals as possible under our continuous Outreach programs.

In Mkhizwane, a remote rural area, where most animal owners have no transport, our Field Officers educated owners on animal care and vaccinated 198 dogs and 15 cats against Rabies.

The Kloof & Highway SPCA would like to give special thanks to our wonderful supporters and donors who have made it possible for us to not only help the animals in our care, but so many animals in our community where the owners are really battling financially at this time.

Without your loyal support we cannot continue the fight to prevent cruelty against animals and relieve suffering. Every donation changes the life of an animal!
